The Port Townsend Marine Science Center has partnered with Puget Sound Express whale watching company to offer these seasonal birdwatching cruises around Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge since 1994, providing a view to the changing community of birds and mammals using the sanctuary.
Today these cruises go around either Protection Island, part of the Protection Island Aquatic Reserve, or Smith Island, part of the Smith and Minor Islands Aquatic Reserve.

These photos and words are the product of a five-day trip taken by Nicholas England and Mike Kalichman in September of 2025. They visited parts of Seattle, the Skagit River, Fidalgo Island, and Lopez Island. Like much of the work done at the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, this project inspires us to look more closely at this remarkable Salish Sea, including the birds we might only have seen in passing or at a distance.
On International Coastal Cleanup Day, volunteers from around the world will work together to keep our oceans and the life in them as healthy and diverse as possible. In partnership with WA CoastSavers, Port Townsend Marine Science Center is sponsoring beach cleanups in the East Jefferson County area. Join us on September 19, from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at either of our cleanup locations: Fort Worden State Park or Port Ludlow Resort!
Join PTMSC at Finnriver Farm & Cidery for a night of marine-themed trivia from 5:30 – 8 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Port Townsend Marine Science Center.
